Dear All,

This is to let you know that due to the requests of many schools, teachers and candidates AACI Open Centre is offering a new date for the FCE exam in November.

The written exams will be administered on 12 November and the Speaking Test Window is from 4 November to 13 November.

Registration window is the same as for the December session: opens 1 August and ends on 9 September.

We hope that this will help schools and candidates organize their end-of-the-year activities better.

Please remember that we are still offering the December session.

IATEFL 45th Annual Conference, Brighton UK,
15-19th April 2011

University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations is offering five scholarships for attendance at the IATEFL Brighton Conference, 2011.

The five scholarships are:
• Cambridge ESOL Best Practice in English for Academic Purposes Scholarship
• Cambridge ESOL Best Practice in Language Assessment Scholarship
• Cambridge ESOL Best Practice in State Education Scholarship
• Cambridge ESOL Best Practice in Teacher Training Scholarship
• Dr Peter Hargreaves Scholarship

Each scholarship award consists of:
• registration for a pre-conference event of the winner´s choice
• registration for the main conference
• a year´s IATEFL membership
• a maximum of five nights´ accommodation
• travel costs including, if necessary, an economy flight to the UK*
• £50.00 per day expenses
* This includes the cost of flights and airport transfers. Cambridge ESOL will not cover the cost of stopovers.

Graduate teacher from IES en Lenguas Vivas “J. R Fernández”. Marisa holds an MA in Applied Linguistics and TEFL from King’s College, University of London (2000) and a Postgraduate Degree in Education Management (2009, Univ Torcuato Di Tella). She is a Cambridge ESOL Oral Examiner and led the team of examiners at AACI for 7 years. Former Branch Manager at Asociación Argentina de Cultura Inglesa, she is currently the Centre Exams Manager of AR609, AACI Open Centre.
Verónica Quintieri
Graduate teacher from INES en Lenguas Vivas " Juan Ramón Fernández”. She holds a Diploma in English Language Teaching from Cambridge University. Verónica is an IELTS Examiner, an Oral Examiner for the University of Cambridge Local Examination and a Cambridge presenter. She has recently become a CELTA Assistant Tutor.
She has taught at Lenguas Vivas secondary school and has been a Language I Lecturer at Lenguas Vivas Translators´Course. She is currently teaching an Advanced Language Course at AACI Lomas. She has been working for International House Buenos Aires for sixteen years now.
Gabriela López López
Graduate teacher from IES en Lengua Vivas "J. R. Fernández". She also holds an MA in ELT and Applied Linguistics from King’s College, University of London. She has taught and coordinated at different educational levels in a number of private and public schools as well as language institutes. She is currently specializing in new technologies in EFL and in Teacher Development. She works at AACI as part of the ‘DAE’ team, as a tutor for online courses and in the implementation of new technologies.

Remember this year the Statement of Entry has been replaced by the COE (Confirmation of Entry), the form providing details of date, time and venue for each exam component. COE's are emailed directly by Cambridge ESOL so correct email addresses are of vital importance. If Schools, Institutes or Private Teachers want to receive this information themselves for later distribution to candidates, the School, Institute or Private Teacher's email address must be provided for all candidates.

This year groups of 5 or more FCE candidates will get a discount of USD 8 in their exam fee. For them to be registered as a group and get this benefit they must be enrolled by an institution or their teachers. As from 2010 the candidates will learn about the date and time of their exams through the Confirmation of Entry (COE), new name for Statement of Entry, which at our Centre used to be called "la citación".
These will reach all candidates by email at the address they provide when they complete their online registration form.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
If Schools and Private Institutes would like to centralise this information to later distribute it to candidates, make sure the field with the candidate's email address IS NOT filled out. The system will automatically forward all the COE's to the School or Private Institute's email address.

British Council’s 2010 Innovation in ELT Award is a prestigious industry award jointly sponsored by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, the British Council, British Airways and IATEFL. Set up in 2006, the programme continues to provide underprivileged 11–14 year olds with a basic knowledge of English through classroom activities inspired by the hit pirate movie.

Mr Jamie Duncan has successfully completed his training becoming the ET for Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.

What is TKT: Practical?

A test of professional practice for Language Teachers

TKT: Practical is a new module of the Teaching Knowledge Test that certifies practical teaching skills, offering an accessible and affordable way for teachers to get certification of their teaching abilities. It is ideal for teachers who have developed their skills and need formal confirmation of their practical teaching competence.

TKT: Practical complements the range of teaching tests and awards offered by Cambridge ESOL. It can be taken together with other TKT modules or on its own.

TKT: Practical includes assessment of lesson planning, classroom management and teaching

Candidates are not required to attend a course in order to register for TKT: Practical

What knowledge do candidates need to have?

First Certificate in English (B2 level) for Schools

Following the successful introduction of KET for Schools and PET for Schools, Cambridge ESOL is pleased to announce that a new version of the First Certificate in English will be available in 2011, designed for those who are learning English as part of their full time education.

The format for the new exam is the same as the existing First Certificate and covers the same range and level of English language skills. The content of the exams will be designed specifically for this age group, covering topics and situations that they are likely to be familiar with. By including language typically used in the classroom, the new exam is ideal for use in schools where language learning is integrated with other elements of the curriculum.

Roger Johnson – Director of Assessment and Operations Group at Cambridge ESOL explains: "English is becoming a core subject in the school curriculum all over the world, and students are achieving a high level of language skills at a younger age. This new version of First Certificate in English will meet the needs of these students by giving them a well-known, internationally recognised qualification and the motivation to learn English. First Certificate is already taken by hundreds of thousands of learners all over the world, and this development will make it accessible to a new generation."

Candidates getting A in CAE certify at C2 level

High-performing candidates for one of the world's most widely recognised English language qualifications will now receive additional recognition for their achievement.

From the March 2010 exams onwards, certificates awarded to candidates who achieve a grade A in the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English will show that their result is at level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), while those for grades B and C will continue to show level C1.

This is an important development and reflects the reality of Cambridge Advanced - a high level exam first introduced in 1991 which proves that candidates have the language skills they need to succeed in higher education in an English-speaking environment. Cambridge Advanced is already widely recognised by universities and employers around the world, and this will make the exam more appealing to candidates who want to demonstrate a very high level of ability in English. Material in the exam continues to be set at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), but candidates who achieve grade A have shown evidence of proficiency at the C2 level in some or all of the areas assessed

UK exam regulator Ofqual has formally accredited Cambridge Advanced grade A at level 3 in the UK's National Qualifications Framework (which is equivalent CEFR level C2) while grades B and C continue to be accredited at level 2.

Cambridge Advanced is backed by an extensive programme of research to ensure that it meets the needs of candidates, teachers and higher education institutions, and that it provides a reliable, accurate picture of the skills needed for higher education and professional use at a high level. This research is reported in detail in several volumes in the series Studies in Language Testing (published by Cambridge University Press) and Cambridge ESOL's quarterly publication Research Notes.
